FLAG are very encouraged by the published findings and recommendations put forward by the Report on Winter Floods by the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee.
Chair Anne McIntosh’s statement that
"We have repeatedly called on the Government to increase revenue funding so that necessary dredging and watercourse maintenance can be carried out to minimise flood risk, yet funding for maintenance remains at a bare minimum. Ministers must take action now to avoid a repeat of the devastation caused by the winter floods."
is precisely the message we have been conveying since we formed FLAG in December 2012.
We hope that the Committee’s recommendations are adopted to ensure that future flood management is efficient and best value for money for the taxpayer.
Above we hope that lessons will be learnt following the devastation of the floods of 2014 and that flood management has enough funding to ensure that is now proactive, rather than reactive to ensure the safety for communities around the whole country.
