RE: FLAG SKY DIVE EVENT – Supporting the flood affected people of the Somerset Levels

Release date: 5/13/2014

Flooding on the Levels Action Group Volunteer (FLAG)
Somerset Community Foundation (SCF)
South Somerset Association For Voluntary and Community (SSVCA)
19 volunteers who have supported the flood relief on the Somerset levels will be doing a 15,000 feet Charity skydive event on the 3rd July at Dunkeswell in Devon.
The volunteers are also holding a fundraising auction event on the 14th June 2014 at Taunton RFC. Both events are to raise money for three organisations Flooding on the Levels Action Group (FLAG), the Somerset Community Foundation (Flood Relief Fund) and the South Somerset Association for Voluntary and Community Action (SSVCA). The team is hoping to raise in excess of £5,000.
Event organiser, Mark Rosales, says “This is a great challenge for many of the volunteers.  We are all excited to do this sky dive and raise money for the 3 organisations, so that they can continue to support the community and raise awareness regarding better water management across the Somerset Levels”
During the winter of 2014 the Somerset Levels faced its worst flooding ever recorded and businesses, homes and farmland were flooded, with many people and animals being evacuated.
Volunteers from Somerset Levels and beyond have been helping the residents affected by the flooding; initially in the emergency phase when help consisted of helping build sandbag defences and rescuing residents, cars, livestock and possessions.  Since the flooding has receded, the help from the multiple groups has turned from saving homes to clearing the devastation left behind by the floods.
It will take a long time for families and communities to get back on their feet and rebuild their homes and businesses, which is why the continued support of the volunteers is essential.
