FLAG Press Release re: FLAG Press Release re: Welly Walk Fundraiser
A Welly Walk was held today in the village of Stoke St Gregory in aid of the Flooding on the Levels Action Group (FLAG). The event was to raise awareness for the current campaign to get the Rivers Parrett and Tone dredged so that the terrible events of the last 2 years are not repeated.
Over 115 hundred walkers attended the event and there were many FLAG hoodies in attendance. Families pulled on their wellies and had a fun walk around the village, in what was a bit of light relief during some very difficult times. As ever the community spirit was out in force. The sun came out and the rain managed to stay away until the last walkers entered the Willow Set Pre School for some welcome refreshments. The Pre School and Clarke Autos hosted the event and it was declared a resounding success. There was great support from both residents and people who had come from further afield to support our community.
We are a non-profit organisation and all monies raised will go towards raising our profile in the media; this includes marketing and printing material to keep our situation in the public eye.
Today’s event was to help our children understand the impact of the flooding on both the local community and the landscape. The message for them was that if the rivers are dredged and maintained then the future generation can enjoy the Somerset Levels as much as the older generation.
We are now anxiously waiting for the Spring Tides that are due tonight and in the morning. The River Parrett has already overtopped in several places and from local reports even overtopped at Blake Gardens in Bridgwater at high tide this morning. We are holding a Tidewatch event in Burrowbridge at 8.00am on Sunday 2nd February so that the local community can stand together in support of each other as the high tides sweep through the River Parrett.
The Welly Walkers finish at Stoke St Gregory.
